Niklas Natt Och Dag: The Wolf and the Watchman

The muck and foulness of Stockholm in 1793 is well described in this debut by Niklas Natt Och Dag and you’ll cringe all along the way.

A body found in a Stockholm river has the watchman Mickel Cardell reeling in shock. The victim has been horrifyingly sundered – with no arms, legs, eyes, or tongue.

Dying from consumption, lawyer Cecil Winge is pressured into solving the crime as an adjunct to the Stockholm police.

Elsewhere, the courageous Anna Stint escapes a brutal guard at the workhouse she’s been sent to by a vindictive priest.

These three cross paths that lead them in unexpected directions with unexpected actions. Great character development but definitely not for the squeamish.

  1. This scenario wouldn’t seem out of place in the more contemporary Swedish series,”The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”. It does sound fascinating, in a macabre way.
