East Texas in the 90s is a hardscrabble time. People make do, and some do what they shouldn’t. You’ve got some decent people round about but all the scuttlebutt is at the feed store where the three Jimmies pass judgement on the goings on.

Randy Mayhill once had a best friend. Van was his name and suicide took him. Much the same way the sheriff’s badge was taken away from Mayhill – suddenly and without warning.

Mayhill turns reclusive but keeps a vigilant eye on Van’s daughter Birdie and her grandmother Onie from his property. But he misses the moment a man’s body appears, draped across their fence.

It’s a mystery all right, and even though Birdie denies all knowledge of the man, she’s lying. So what is really going on?
