In trouble? PI Ray Dudgeon is the man to help
It’s happened to you hasn’t it? You’re all set to get into a murder mystery book or crime thriller and realize you’ve read it before. Damned frustrating isn’t it? It just happened to me with Trigger City.
I read it again. Sean Chercover is so good and so smooth. He throws irony, humor and sarcasm into hard-boiled with ease.
Chercover writes the type of page turners with in-depth characters that are lacking in some books. I call those beach books written for an ADD world. They have their place but I’d rather dive and swim than surf.
The protagonist is disenchanted reporter turned Private Investigator Ray Dudgeon. When Dudgeon gets involved bones are broken and blood flows. He’s also compassionate, kind and resourceful.
Big City Bad Blood – Dudgeon is hired as a bodyguard for Hollywood locations manager Bob Loniski who’s a prosecution witness against a member of the mob. Chercover mixes blackmail, Hollywood intrigue, and big trouble with the Chicago Outfit.
Winner, Best First Novel: Shamus Award, Gumshoe Award, Crimespree Award, Lovey Award
Shortlisted for: ITW Thriller Award, Anthony Award, Arthur Ellis Award, Barry Award
Trigger City – Dudgeon takes on a case from a man who is grieving the death of his daughter. A woman who lived a quiet life she was employed by a political contractor and was killed by her co-worker. Lots of para-military types, Washington intrigue and threatening behaviour. Also the continuation of a love story from the previous book but stands alone.
Winner, Best Novel: IMBA Dilys Award, Crimespree Award
Shortlisted for: Anthony Award, Barry Award, Macavity Award
I’m not sure why I haven’t written about Chercover before now. I think it’s the sheer volume of reading material that at times, makes you forget about books you already have in your library. Not to mention the waiting for the next in the series.
Buy, read, enjoy.
