Southern Gothic in the Louisiana Bayou
Loyal May is back home to take care of her ailing mother. She discovers that her childhood friend, Cutter Labasque, whom she hasn’t spoken to in years, has been found dead in the bayou – apparently a suicide. It’s a story she wants to dig into.
Being back in Jacknife is unsettling for May. As a journalist she wants the facts, but her personal relationship with the Labasque family has her faltering in the backstory.
The personal attachments and soured history underscore much of the story, but as May digs into the suicide the more she begins to understand that things are not that cut and dried.
There are excellent characters in this book, they help and hinder in their own way and bring depth to the story. Some are simply trying to get-by in a world that has done them no favours.
Bailey has written a deeply atmospheric book, you sweat in the humid heat and feel the tension in relationships. You’ll enjoy it.
