Victoria Weisfeld: She Knew Too Much

American travel writer Genie Clarke arrives in Rome chasing the kind of vivid detail that turns a good assignment into a great one.

She’s in a cafe when she overhears a conversation by thugs discussing a secret “project”. It becomes her death sentence as they notice her interest. Clarke is brutally attacked and left for dead. Waking in a hospital she may be alive, but her story is dismissed by the police.

Clarke may be shaken but she’s a smart, observant, woman who is insistent about what happened. It’s the arrival of Detective Leo Angelini, where she get the validation she needs.

Angelini connects the murder of another woman to Clarke’s beating and understands the risk to her is real. He moves her from the hospital to the home of a friend.

She Knew Too Much is a nice departure from the heavy, noir crime fiction I usually feature. Victoria Weisfeld weaves small acts of reliability, moments of vulnerability, and a growing sense Clarke and Angelini are braver together than alone, into a story that’s quite an enjoyable read.

I happily reviewed Weisfeld’s first book Architect of Courage in 2022. Please Click Here to read.

Weisfeld’s title immediately reminded me of the Hitchcock thriller, The Man Who Knew Too Much. Weisfeld’s characterization of Clarke was more focused, subjective and attention-getting.

Thanks so much, June! I’ve lived with these characters long enough and deeply enough that they are very much real people to me. It’s gratifying that others–that is, readers!–enjoy getting to know them too.

I very much like the premise of this one, June. It sounds quite believable, and it’s an effective, credible way to get a sleuth (who’s not a cop) involved in a case. I can see why you thought this worked.
