Kevin Wade: Johnny Careless

It’s the tattoo that confirmed the dead man washed ashore was Johnny Chambliss. He bore the same tattoo as Sherriff (Jeep) Mullane who stood in stunned silence at the scene.

The coroner says “death undetermined” due to unexplained scratches on Johnny’s shoulders. As Jeep tries to learn how Johnny died, he’s forced to revisit their history.

Despite Johnny’s attitude and reckless ways, there was always much more to him than many took the time to discover. Money not only hides a multitude of sins, it can be a shield for the vulnerable.

Jeep must navigate small-town loyalties and the unspoken rules that protect privilege – while confronting his own grief.

Smoothly told between the timeline of their youth and Jeep’s present-day investigation Johnny Careless is the beginning of a series and a well recommended read.

I am sensing a nostalgic read with a character and setting out of the 1950s. Different.

The name would certainly imply that, but it doesn’t take place in that era. 🙂

Compelling!!! The title, the victim and setting are powerful. An awesome review June. Definitely a must read.

I’m with Margot. For me, whatever the genre, the characters are absolutely essential to my enjoyment of the story. And they must have some nuance.

Definitely Laurie, you have to give a damn about the characters to enjoy what’s happening!

It sounds as though there’s some solid character depth here, June. For me, that adds a lot to a story. And the first novel of a series is always key; that’s how you get to know the characters and wonder what’s going to happen to them as the series goes on. I’m glad this one worked for you.
