NYPD Detective Nick Ryan is more than his job, and more than his army background. Right now, he’s on the vocation of revenge.

Since his best friend Pete swallowed his gun in disgrace, he’s focused on this one thing. It will result in a justified death, and the likely outcome of Ryan going to prison.

A last minute intervention has him escorted to a building in the Bronx. A shadowy group wants him to clean up the city. A fixer of the highest degree.

They have the wealth and power to give him whatever he needs to get it done. But whose thumb will Ryan be under if he takes on this role?

Sleepless City read as a series of vignettes to me. Snapshots of conversations and actions in clear relief. It’s brisk, nimble, and well paced. Reading how Ryan navigates the cesspit of manipulators will keep you gratified.

Reed is a four time Edgar Award nominee in three different categories: Best Novel, Best Paperback Original, and Best Short Story. He is a four-time recipient of the Shamus Award for Best PI Novel of the Year. He has also won the Audie, Macavity, Barry, and Anthony Awards.

With their kids moved away to far off Brooklyn, Reed, his wife Rosanne, and their cats live in the wilds of Suffolk County on Long Island.

  1. This is an interesting premise, June. Sometimes the ‘vigilante’ sort of plot can go a bit off the rails and into too much disbelief. It sounds, though, as if character development plays a big role here, too, and that can make all the difference.
